Use Bearly on a web page

The Bearly extension puts a side panel next to the page you are reading. Summarize the page, pull out action items, explain a passage you selected, or ask a question and get an answer grounded in that page.

The extension also lets the Bearly desktop app work in your regular Chrome tabs. See Control Chrome from Bearly for that.

Install and connect

1. Install Bearly from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Select the Bearly icon in the toolbar. The side panel opens.
3. Select Sign in with Bearly and finish the usual Google, Microsoft, or email login. Bearly shows which account will be connected before you continue.
4. Select Allow website access, then approve the browser’s request for access to all websites.

The panel shows Ready for this page when it is set up. A small Bearly page button appears at the bottom-right edge of ordinary web pages. You stay connected in that browser profile until you disconnect.

Work with the page

Open the page, then select the Bearly toolbar icon to open the panel. The presets sit above the composer:

• Summarize returns an executive summary and the key takeaways. After a summary, More detail asks for a longer version.
• Action items finds tasks, owners, deadlines, decisions, and open questions.
• Explain selection explains the text you selected first. It stays disabled until there is a selection.
• The Ask this page box at the bottom answers a question from that page rather than from general knowledge. Press Enter to send.

The Bearly page button runs the same three presets without opening the panel first. Select it, then choose Summarize page, Action items, or Explain selection; the answer arrives in the panel.

Answers appear in the panel with the page title and site they came from. Select Copy to take a result with you.

Follow-up questions continue in the same panel and can use the recent turns from that page. Select the Clear conversation eraser in the panel header to drop those turns. Moving to a different page starts fresh, and a New page divider marks the change.

Google Workspace and YouTube

Summarize, Action items, and Ask this page work in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive file pages using the document text your signed-in browser can already download. You do not connect Google Drive separately. On a YouTube video page, Bearly uses the video’s transcript when one is published.

If your organization blocks document downloads, Bearly shows Bearly cannot read this page. Explain selection can be unavailable in Google Docs because the editor does not always expose the selection to the browser.

What Bearly sends

Bearly sends nothing until you choose an action. It then sends a cleaned copy of the readable page text — or only your selection, for Explain selection — together with a picture of the visible part of the tab, which the model uses as supporting context. That picture can include anything on screen at the time, so close or scroll away from what you do not want included.

Results and page text are not saved to your Bearly account. Recent turns stay in the browser only while that tab is open.

Settings

Select the gear in the panel header.

• Response language sets the answer language. Automatic matches the page, or your question when you ask one.
• Quick actions chooses which presets appear above the composer and their order. Ask this page is always available, and at least one preset stays on.
• Website access turns page actions on or off across websites. Page button shows or hides the on-page Bearly shortcut, and a third row hides it for the site you are on.
• Account has Open Bearly account and Disconnect Bearly. Disconnecting removes Bearly from this browser and revokes its website access; your Bearly account and your work are unaffected.

You can also manage the page button from the page itself. Open it and select Hide on this page to hide it until you reload, Don’t show on this site to keep it hidden there, or Hide Forever to remove it from every website. Hide Forever asks for confirmation, and Page button in settings turns it back on.

If something does not work

What you see	What to do
Connect Bearly before running an action.	Select Sign in with Bearly and finish the browser login window.
Bearly could not finish signing in. Try again.	Return to the panel and select Sign in with Bearly again.
Bearly cannot read this page.	Open a normal http or https page. Browser settings pages, extension-store pages, and other protected surfaces do not allow extensions to read them.
Bearly does not have permission for this site.	Open the panel settings and turn on Website access, then approve the browser’s request.
Select text first.	Select text in the main part of the page before running Explain selection.
Bearly could not reach the AI service.	Check your connection and run the action again.
The page button no longer appears	Open settings and check Page button, and the row for the current site. If Website access is off, turn it on first.

If the extension keeps refusing requests, select Disconnect Bearly in settings, then sign in again. Write to Bearly Support if the problem continues.
