# Organize chats with projects

HTML: [https://bearly.ai/docs/projects/overview/](https://bearly.ai/docs/projects/overview/)

> Keep related chats, files, instructions, and settings together in a Bearly project.

Projects give a body of work its own place in Bearly. A project can hold related chats and files, apply the same chat defaults across those conversations, and be shared with people on your teams.

## Create a project

1. In the chat sidebar, find **Projects** and select the **New project** folder-plus button.
2. In **Create New Project**, enter a **Project Name**.
3. Optional: turn on **Enable password encryption?**, then enter and confirm a password of at least eight characters.
4. Select **Create Project**. Bearly opens the new project's **Settings** page.

Your organization may require password protection or prevent project creation. In that case, the password option is already on or the **New project** button is unavailable.

You can also choose a project while starting a chat. Select the **No project** chip below the new-chat composer, type in **Find or create a project...**, then choose an existing project or **Create “project name”**. The chat starts in that project when you send its first message.

## Work inside a project

Select a project name in the sidebar to expand it. Its main destinations are:

- **Settings** — set project-wide chat defaults, manage access, add Skills, protect the project, and—on desktop—sync a local directory.
- **Docs & Data** — upload, search, inspect, and remove files available to project chats.
- **Start chat** — begin a new conversation in the project.

Project chats appear beneath those controls. Select the project-name chip in an open chat to open that project's **Docs & Data**.

To control conversational memory within a project chat, select the sliders icon beside the message box and open **Memories**. Choose **Project Only** to recall context from chats in the same project, **All Chats** to search more broadly, or **Off** to avoid recalling earlier conversations.

### Move a chat into or out of a project

Open the chat's three-dot menu and select **Move to project...**, then choose a project. The picker puts pinned and recently used projects first and includes **Search projects...** when you need it.

To return a project chat to the main chat list, open its three-dot menu, select **Move to project...**, then select **Remove from project**. Removing a chat from a project does not delete the chat.

On a computer, you can also drag a chat onto a project or drag it back to the main chat list. Use **Move to project...** on touch devices.

## Rename, archive, or delete a project

Open the project's three-dot menu for these actions. **Rename** and **Delete** are available to project owners.

### Rename

Select **Rename**, enter the new name, then press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or click away. Bearly currently uses the standard folder icon for projects; the project menu does not offer custom colors or icons.

### Archive

Select **Archive** to hide a project from the regular sidebar without deleting it. When you have archived items, select **Archives** in the sidebar footer to show them, then open the project's menu and select **Unarchive** to restore it.

An archived project cannot be deleted until you unarchive it.

### Delete

1. Open the project's three-dot menu and select **Delete**.
2. Decide whether to turn on **Also delete all chats in this project**.
   - Off: the project's chats return to the main chat list.
   - On: chats in the project are permanently deleted with it.
3. Select **Delete Project**.

> **Danger**
> Deleting a project and its settings cannot be undone. Archived chats are protected from deletion; if you need to delete them too, unarchive them first.
